Te mapa
Muntok, also written Mentok, sits at the western end of Bangka Island, looking across the Bangka Strait toward Sumatra. For much of its history it was a port and administrative town built around tin, the mineral that shaped the island's economy. On a map the town spreads along the coast, with its older streets close to the water.
The shoreline curves around a low promontory, and the streets follow it: a denser core near the old harbour and looser development inland. Menumbing hill rises from the flat land behind the town. Muntok also gives its name to Muntok white pepper, known in spice markets far beyond Indonesia.
During the Indonesian National Revolution, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta were held in exile at Muntok in 1949. A Muntok map poster brings together that history and the town's simple coastal geometry: the strait, the shore, the harbour streets and the hill standing just beyond them.
Open water lies to the west, separating Bangka from Sumatra. On the poster the strait is a wide, calm field against which the town's coastline stands out.
Denser streets cluster near the waterfront, where the port grew as a hub for shipping tin and for trade across the strait.
A hill rises from the lowland behind the town and breaks the otherwise flat street pattern. It is linked to the 1949 exile of the country's future leaders.
