Te mapa
Mutsu is the largest city on the Shimokita Peninsula, the axe-shaped northern tip of Aomori Prefecture at the far end of Honshu. The city lies along the northern shore of Mutsu Bay, and its map is defined by the meeting of a calm inner bay, a flat coastal strip and forested hills that climb toward the peninsula's volcanic interior.
The urban area is spread out along the shore. The central district of Tanabu has a regular pattern of streets, while Ōminato, to the south along the bay, grew around the harbour that hosts a base of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Roads and railway run along the coast and tie these districts together.
A Mutsu map poster shows a city at the edge of the country. Inland stands Mount Osore, Osorezan, a volcanic caldera with a crater lake and the Bodai-ji temple, long regarded as one of Japan's three most sacred mountains. On the poster, the bay, the coastal line of streets and the empty highlands form a striking, open design.
The city follows the curve of the bay, and the clean coastline sets a strong horizontal line across the poster with calm open water beyond it.
Two main districts, the grid of central Tanabu and the harbour area of Ōminato, form separate clusters joined by coastal roads and rail.
Roads climb inland into forested, mostly empty highlands toward the caldera of Mount Osore, leaving a large calm area on the map around the city.

Koteā ko Mutsu
Mutsu is a place of long winters, sea air and quiet distance from the rest of Japan. Those who were born here, served at Ōminato or travelled to Osorezan will recognise the city's shape at once, and a map keeps that northern memory close.
