Te mapa
Nikol’sk lies in the north-eastern part of Penza Oblast, in rolling country of forest and farmland. The town's map is a modest arrangement of streets and low houses along small river valleys, with a few main roads leading out to neighbouring districts. The forest comes close to the town on several sides and reaches deep into the surrounding land.
Nikol’sk grew around glassmaking. The local glassworks dates back to the eighteenth century and is one of the oldest in Russia. For much of its history it was known as Krasny Gigant, and its crystal and glassware have been widely recognised. The town also has a museum dedicated to the history of Russian glass.
A Nikol’sk map poster shows a town where one industry shaped the whole community. The factory grounds sit near the heart of the map, and the residential streets spread out around them. The quiet valleys and dark woods of the northern Penza region fill the rest of the frame.
The eighteenth-century glass factory is the historic core of the town, and its long tradition of crystal and glass is Nikol’sk's best-known feature.
The town has a museum of Russian glass, a reminder of how closely local life has been tied to the craft for centuries.
Woodland and small river valleys surround the town, giving the edge of the map soft, irregular shapes around a compact centre.
