North Chicago sits in Lake County, Illinois, along the western shore of Lake Michigan between Waukegan and Lake Bluff. Despite the name, it is a separate city well to the north of Chicago itself. Its map combines a straight inland grid, a broad industrial belt along the rail lines and a long shoreline that forms a clean edge to the east.
Much of the lakefront is occupied by Naval Station Great Lakes, home to the Navy's only boot camp, where recruits train on a base of streets, drill fields and buildings arranged in careful blocks. Ravines cut through the bluffs toward the lake, adding thin winding shapes that break up the straight lines of the grid.
The city is also home to the headquarters of AbbVie and to a large Abbott campus, whose buildings and parking areas appear as broad shapes on the map. A North Chicago map poster shows a lakeshore city shaped by training, research and industry, with the open water always along one edge.
