Oak Park borders Chicago's western edge, and on the map it almost continues the city's grid. What makes it different is the scale: long blocks of houses, quiet side streets, and a few main roads, with the Eisenhower Expressway forming a hard southern boundary. Rail lines and the Green Line run east to west through the middle.
Oak Park is known for its architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright lived and worked here early in his career, and his home and studio, Unity Temple, and many of his houses are still standing. Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, and his birthplace is now a museum.

The Eisenhower Expressway runs along the southern side of the village. It forms a wide, straight line that separates Oak Park from its neighbours.
