The Amazon narrows
The river tightens noticeably in front of the town. This single channel of water dominates the map and explains why Óbidos was built exactly here.

Te mapa
Óbidos stands on the north bank of the Amazon in western Pará. It overlooks the stretch known as the Garganta do Amazonas, the narrowest and one of the deepest points on the lower river. On the map, the town is a small grid of streets on high ground above the water, with the enormous river filling much of the frame.
That narrow passage gave the town its strategic role. In the colonial period, the Portuguese built a fort here to control traffic on the river. Óbidos grew as a river port and kept its older street pattern near the waterfront. Today, boats and ferries still connect it to Santarém and other towns along the Amazon.
An Óbidos map poster is unusual because the town is not the dominant shape. The broad band of the river, the islands and backwaters, and the forest edge create most of the composition. The compact town grid sits at the water's edge as a small, precise counterpoint to them.
The river tightens noticeably in front of the town. This single channel of water dominates the map and explains why Óbidos was built exactly here.
The town's streets form a small regular grid on raised ground above the bank. That position kept the town clear of the river's seasonal rise.
Upstream and downstream, side channels and low islands break the river into softer shapes. They contrast with the straight lines of the town's streets.
