Te mapa
Óc Eo lies in An Giang province in the Mekong Delta, in a landscape of rice fields, canals and scattered settlements along waterways. The ground is almost entirely flat, and on a map the dominant pattern is a lattice of straight irrigation canals, with houses and roads strung along their banks rather than gathered into a dense centre.
The name is known far beyond the delta because of the Óc Eo archaeological site, the remains of a port city of the Funan kingdom that flourished from roughly the first to the seventh centuries. Excavations have found objects linked to trade with India, China and the Mediterranean world, and the site is protected as a special national monument.
An Óc Eo map poster reflects a place where water shapes everything. Long canals divide the land into rectangles, a small mountain rises nearby as the only relief, and settlement follows the water in thin lines. The result is a graphic, almost geometric print.
Straight canals cut across the delta in parallel lines, dividing the land into long rectangular plots and forming the main structure of the map.
Homes and roads line the canal banks in thin ribbons, a characteristic delta pattern very different from a compact town centre.
The ancient Funan site lies in this flat country near Ba Thê mountain, the only notable rise in an otherwise level delta plain.
