Oconomowoc is a city in Wisconsin's Lake Country, west of Milwaukee, and its map is shaped almost entirely by water. The downtown sits on a narrow strip of land between Fowler Lake and Lac La Belle, and more lakes lie close by, including Oconomowoc Lake to the east.
The name is usually traced to a Potawatomi word describing a place where waters meet. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy families from Chicago and Milwaukee built summer homes around the lakes, and many large estates still line the shores.
