Te mapa
Owen Sound sits at the southern end of a long, narrow inlet of Georgian Bay in Ontario. The water reaches right into the city, and the Sydenham River flows into the harbour from the south, dividing the downtown into east and west sides. On a map the result is a very clear shape: a wedge of water with streets rising on both sides.
The city is surrounded by the Niagara Escarpment, whose cliffs and slopes enclose the valley on three sides. Streets on the valley floor follow a regular grid, while roads climbing the escarpment bend and curve. Parks and conservation areas along the river, including Harrison Park and the falls further upstream, form green bands through the map.
Owen Sound is closely associated with the painter Tom Thomson, whose work is shown in the gallery named after him, and it was the birthplace of the First World War pilot Billy Bishop. An Owen Sound map poster shows a harbour city defined by its inlet and its escarpment walls.
The long, narrow bay reaches deep into the city, giving the poster a strong central shape of water between two built-up shores.
The river divides the downtown and continues south through parks, forming a green and blue line through the grid.
The Niagara Escarpment encloses the valley, and the roads that climb it curve and bend against the orderly grid below.
