Te mapa
Paine lies at the southern edge of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, where the Central Valley narrows between the Andes and the Coastal Range. From above, it is a town of modest grids and scattered villages, surrounded by a broad pattern of fields, vineyards and orchards divided by irrigation canals.
The Pan-American Highway runs through the commune from north to south. It is the strongest line on the map, and settlements have grown along it and along the railway. To the south, the hills come closer together at the narrow pass known as Angostura de Paine, which marks the boundary of the metropolitan region.
Paine is known throughout Chile for its watermelons, which are sold at roadside stands every summer. The commune also keeps a memorial to local people who disappeared during the dictatorship, a reminder of its place in the country's recent history. A Paine map poster shows a farming community set between the valley and the hills.
Chile's main north–south road passes through the commune. It forms a strong, straight axis that the town and villages have grown along.
Canals and farm roads divide the valley into a patchwork of fields and orchards. The result is a detailed pattern that fills most of the map.
In the south, the valley narrows between hills. The land closes in and the roads bunch together, making a clear natural gateway.
