Te mapa
Palo lies on the eastern coast of Leyte, just south of Tacloban, facing the open water of Leyte Gulf. From above the town is defined by its shoreline: a long, gently curving beach with the settled area running inland behind it. The town centre is a compact grid near the coastal highway, and beyond it roads lead west across flat farmland toward the hills of the interior.
Palo holds a well-known place in Second World War history. The American landings on Leyte in October 1944 came ashore along this coast, and the MacArthur Landing Memorial near Red Beach marks the event. The town was also among the places hit hardest by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
A Palo map poster frames that coast and the town behind it: the clean edge of the gulf, the grid of the centre and the roads fanning out into the countryside. Small rivers cross the coastal plain on their way to the sea and add a few winding lines to an otherwise orderly layout.
A long, smooth coastline runs along the eastern edge of the town. On the poster it forms a strong boundary between the detailed streets and the plain open water.
The stretch of coast where the 1944 landings took place is marked by the MacArthur Landing Memorial. It is one of the best-known sites in Eastern Visayas.
The older centre follows a compact, regular grid near the coastal highway. It sits at the heart of the map, with rural roads spreading out around it.

Koteā ko Palo
Palo means different things to different people: a hometown, a place of wartime memory, a community that rebuilt after the typhoon. A map of its streets and coastline respects all of those without needing a photograph.
