Pereiaslav is one of the oldest towns in Ukraine, mentioned in chronicles in the tenth century as a major centre of Kyivan Rus. It lies southeast of Kyiv, on the Trubizh river close to where it meets the Dnieper, today widened into the Kyiv Reservoir. On a map, the town shows a dense historic core, surrounded by newer districts and the lowland meadows and marshes of the river valley.
In 1654 the town hosted the Pereiaslav Council, a key event in the history of the Cossack Hetmanate. It is also the birthplace of the writer Sholem Aleichem. Pereiaslav is known for its many museums, above all the large open-air museum of folk architecture on the edge of town, where old wooden houses, windmills and churches from the region stand in a wide landscape.
A Pereiaslav map poster brings together the curves of the Trubizh, the old streets of the centre and the flat floodplain toward the Dnieper. The town was called Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi for much of the twentieth century and took back its historic name in 2019, a change the poster can reflect in a personal title.
The small river winds around the town before reaching the Dnieper, adding a gentle curving line through the meadows on the map.
On the edge of town, the folk architecture museum occupies a large area of paths, historic houses and windmills set in open land.
Low meadows and wetlands stretch toward the Kyiv Reservoir, giving the eastern part of the map a soft, open texture.
