Peritoró is a municipality in the interior of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil. From above, the town takes the form of a compact settlement stretched along the main highway, with short side streets branching into a small grid on either side. Around it, the flat terrain opens into pastures, farmland and patches of vegetation.
The Maranhão interior is characterised by extensive rural land and by babaçu palms, which play an important role in the local economy and daily life of the region. Towns like Peritoró serve as service points for travellers and as local centres for the surrounding rural communities.
