Petauke is a town in Zambia's Eastern Province, set on the Great East Road that links Lusaka with Chipata and the border with Malawi. From above, the highway forms the backbone of the town, with the main commercial strip along it and residential areas spreading out to either side in a mix of planned blocks and looser clusters of houses.
As a district centre, Petauke serves a wide rural area where farming is the main livelihood, and the surrounding map is a pattern of small fields, footpaths and scattered villages. The land is gently undulating, and seasonal streams leave faint lines across the countryside. Travellers heading east toward Chipata and the Luangwa valley often pass through or stop here.
