Te mapa
Piqua sits in Miami County in western Ohio, and its map is shaped above all by the Great Miami River. The river curves sharply around the town, and several of its bends and meanders appear on the page. The downtown grid is set close to the water, with streets running at the angle the valley allows. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward on higher ground.
The town's name comes from a division of the Shawnee people, and the area was an important meeting ground long before American settlement. In the nineteenth century, the Miami and Erie Canal passed through Piqua and helped it grow as a manufacturing town. North of town, the Johnston Farm and Indian Agency preserves part of that canal and frontier history.
A Piqua map poster shows the river's loops against the straight lines of the town. Interstate 75 runs along the western side, a firm modern edge set against the older street pattern. The composition is easy to read and clearly belongs to one particular stretch of the Ohio river valley.
The river loops around Piqua in wide, pronounced curves. On the poster it is the strongest natural line, framing the downtown and giving the map its unmistakable shape.
Piqua's central grid grew during the years of the Miami and Erie Canal. Its compact blocks near the river mark the historic commercial core of the town.
I-75 runs north–south along the western side of the town. Its long, smooth line contrasts with the finer grid of older streets to the east.
