Te mapa
Pok Hong is a public housing estate in Sha Tin, one of the new towns developed in Hong Kong's New Territories from the 1970s onward. On a map it appears as a group of large residential blocks arranged in a compact plan, with podiums, footbridges and open spaces linking the buildings in the manner typical of Hong Kong estates.
The surrounding area shows how Sha Tin was designed: estates, schools and parks laid out on reclaimed and levelled land around the channelled Shing Mun River, with steep, wooded hills rising around the edges of the valley. Roads and rail lines run in efficient curves through the district, connecting it to Kowloon and the rest of the New Territories.
A Pok Hong map poster shows a small part of a large plan. The tower footprints make strong, repeated shapes, the river channel adds a broad straight line nearby, and the hills leave empty space around the town, giving the composition a dense core and a calm border.
Large residential blocks form a tight group of repeated footprints, the clearest feature on the map and a signature of Hong Kong's public housing.
The river runs through Sha Tin in a wide, engineered channel, drawing a strong line through the new town close to the estate.
Steep green slopes surround the valley, so the urban area appears as a defined shape held in place by the terrain.

For people who grew up in Pok Hong, the estate is a whole world: the courtyards, walkways and the view from a particular floor. A map fixes that geography simply and honestly.
