Te mapa
Pozo Almonte lies on the Pampa del Tamarugal, a high, arid plain in Chile's Tarapacá region between the coastal range and the foothills of the Andes. It is one of the driest landscapes in the world. On a map, the town is a small, regular grid of streets surrounded by very large areas of empty desert, crossed by a few long highways.
The area was once at the centre of Chile's nitrate industry. Just west of Pozo Almonte are the Humberstone and Santa Laura saltpeter works, abandoned company towns that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Their street grids and industrial yards still show clearly from above. Around the town are the tamarugo trees and plantations that give the pampa its name.
A Pozo Almonte map poster has an unusual amount of empty space. The desert gives the drawing a stark, open quality, and the small grids of the town and the nitrate works look almost graphic by comparison. It suits people from Tarapacá, mining families and travellers who have crossed the Atacama.
The town is laid out in a simple, orderly grid, which stands out sharply against the empty plain around it.
Humberstone and Santa Laura, the abandoned saltpeter towns to the west, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site with their own visible street plans.
The wide desert plain takes its name from the tamarugo tree, which grows here despite the extreme dryness.
