Te mapa
Puntarenas occupies one of the most unusual sites of any city in Central America. The town runs along a long, thin spit of sand reaching into the Gulf of Nicoya on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. In places the spit is only a few blocks wide, so on a map the city looks like a narrow strip of streets with water pressing in from both sides.
For much of the nineteenth century it was the country's main Pacific port, shipping coffee to international markets. Today ferries cross from here to the Nicoya Peninsula, and the long seafront promenade faces the gulf. The streets form a simple, regular grid, stretched lengthwise to fit the land.
A Puntarenas map poster makes that geography its whole subject. The elongated grid, the estuary on the inland side and the open gulf on the other create a composition that is instantly recognisable and quite unlike any other city.
The city runs along a narrow peninsula of sand, only a few blocks wide in places, giving the poster a striking long, thin shape.
Streets follow a regular grid elongated along the spit, with long parallel avenues and short cross streets that emphasise the city's linear form.
Water surrounds the town, with the open gulf on one side and a sheltered estuary on the other, framing the streets in wide pale areas.

Koteā ko Puntarenas
Costa Ricans who spent holidays on the seafront, travellers who took the ferry to Nicoya, and anyone who loves unusual city shapes will find this map compelling. It works especially well on a wide wall.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a trip date, and choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint makes the surrounding water especially vivid.
