Ramenskoye lies southeast of Moscow along the railway toward Ryazan, in a landscape of forests, meadows and river floodplain. From above, the town is organised around the railway, with older streets and industrial areas on either side and newer apartment districts spreading outward. The valley of the Moskva River lies close by to the west and south.
The town grew around a textile mill in the nineteenth century and later became an important industrial and residential centre of Moscow Oblast. Its name is often linked to an old word for the edge of a forest, fitting for a place surrounded by woodland. The district around it includes Gzhel, known for its blue-and-white ceramics.

Borisoglebskoye Lake
This lake inside the town, surrounded by greenery, is one of Ramenskoye's most recognisable features and appears as a calm open shape among the residential blocks.
