Te mapa
Rayleigh sits on a ridge in south-east Essex, between Southend-on-Sea and Basildon. Its core is an old market town, with a long High Street that bends gently through the centre and a church at its northern end. Around it, twentieth-century residential streets spread in curving roads and closes over the surrounding slopes.
Just off the High Street is Rayleigh Mount, the earthworks of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle. It is one of the few castles in Essex recorded in the Domesday Book. Nearby stands a restored windmill. The railway line to London Liverpool Street crosses the town, and the A127 runs past its southern edge.
A Rayleigh map poster shows that layering clearly: the old spine of the High Street, the green shape of the Mount, and the rings of suburban housing around it. In monochrome, the loops and cul-de-sacs of the later estates form a gentle, almost organic pattern around the older centre.

The old market street bends through the town centre, with the parish church at one end and side streets branching off along its length.
The railway to London Liverpool Street and the A127 trunk road frame the town and give its looping suburban streets a clear structure.
