Redditch lies in north-east Worcestershire, on the southern edge of the West Midlands. Seen from above, it is a clear example of post-war planning: an older town centre surrounded by neighbourhood districts, each linked by fast distributor roads that curve around them rather than through them. Roundabouts punctuate the network at regular intervals, and residential streets branch into cul-de-sacs, which gives the map a distinctive, cellular pattern.
Before it was designated a new town in 1964, Redditch was known around the world for needles and fishing hooks, and the Forge Mill Needle Museum still recalls that trade. The expansion that followed added housing and industrial estates to the east, stretching the town toward the valley of the River Arrow.
That valley became Arrow Valley Park, a broad ribbon of lake, grassland and paths that separates districts while tying the town together.
