Te mapa
Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the western Pacific, and this poster shows the island as a whole rather than a single town. Its outline is compact and elongated, running roughly north to south. The western shore is gentle and protected by a wide lagoon, while the rugged eastern coast faces the open ocean.
Most settlement lies along the western side, where Beach Road follows the lagoon through a string of villages, including Garapan, the island's main tourist district. The interior rises to Mount Tapochau, the highest point, and roads thin out across its slopes. At the northern end the land ends abruptly in steep cliffs, while the airport occupies flatter ground in the south.
In 1944 Saipan was the site of a major battle in which US forces captured the island from Japan. Memorials at Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff in the north recall that history, and today the reef-fringed lagoon draws divers. A Saipan map poster traces the full shape of the island in fine lines: its western lagoon, central heights and northern cliffs.
A broad, sheltered lagoon enclosed by a barrier reef runs along the west coast, adding a clear line of reef offshore on the map.
The island's highest point sits near its centre, where roads climb and wind around the slopes, leaving an open area in the middle of the poster.
At the island's northern end, the land drops steeply at Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff, both sites of wartime memorials, giving the outline an abrupt finish.
