Te mapa
Alamagan is one of the northern islands of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a chain of volcanoes strung north of Saipan in the western Pacific. On a map it is almost entirely one volcano: a compact, rounded island whose slopes climb from the shore toward a crater at the top. There is little flat land, and the coast is steep for most of its length.
The island has no town and has been largely uninhabited in recent decades, so the drawing is shaped by terrain rather than streets. Gullies run down the flanks of the cone, and the shoreline shows only minor indentations where ravines meet the sea. The result is a spare, almost diagrammatic image of a volcanic island.
Alamagan lies between Guguan and Pagan in the chain, part of an arc formed where the Pacific plate descends beneath the Philippine Sea plate. An Alamagan map poster presents the island as a clean single form in open water, a portrait of one volcano rather than a place of roads and buildings.
At the centre of the island a crater marks the top of the volcano, the focal point toward which every slope on the map is directed.
Erosion channels fan out from the summit toward the sea, drawn as fine lines that give the cone a quiet starburst texture.
With the neighbouring islands some distance away, the poster is mostly empty Pacific, which makes the rounded outline all the more striking at the centre.
