Salekhard, capital of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, is often described as the only town in the world that lies directly on the Arctic Circle. It sits on the right bank of the Ob near its confluence with the Poluy, on raised ground above a wide floodplain of channels, islands and lakes. From above, the town is a compact grid set against an enormous, watery landscape.
The settlement was founded in 1595 as Obdorsk, a Russian outpost near the mouth of the Ob, and took its present name in 1933. Because the ground is permafrost, many buildings stand on piles, and the streets form a fairly regular pattern of blocks. A Salekhard map poster sets that grid against the braided lines of the river.
Across the Ob lies Labytnangi, and to the west rise the Polar Urals. Salekhard is also linked with the unfinished Transpolar Railway of the Stalin era, whose abandoned sections still cross the tundra. On the map, the lakes and channels around the town become bold, solid shapes, which makes the edge of the built-up area unusually crisp.

Salekhard lies at about 66.5 degrees north, right by the Arctic Circle. It makes the coordinates line on the poster unusually meaningful, and you can keep or edit it.
Countless small lakes and oxbows cover the low ground around the town. Drawn as solid shapes, they form an irregular pattern that frames the compact street grid.

Koteā ko Salekhard
People who have worked in the North often stay attached to the towns where they lived through polar nights and short summers. A map of Salekhard captures that place in a restrained, graphic way, far from the usual postcard views.
Add a title, perhaps the years you spent there, and a subtitle of your choice, and decide how the coordinates should read. Pick from five styles such as Noir or Blueprint, and order a matte print or download 300 DPI files in six sizes for $9.
