Te mapa
Sandoy lies south of Streymoy in the Faroe Islands, and its landscape is gentler than the steep, knife-edged islands to the north. From above, the land rises in rounded hills with grassy valleys between them, and several lakes lie in the lower ground. High cliffs line the west and south coasts. The shores facing north and east are lower and cut by small bays.
There are only a few small villages: Skopun near the north, Sandur on a bay by the island's largest lakes, and Skálavík, Húsavík and Dalur on the east and south. Narrow roads link them across the hills. A Sandoy map poster shows a sparse but deliberate network of lines, with each road leading to a harbour or a cluster of houses.
The name means sand island, after the dunes and sandy beach near Sandur, which are unusual in a country of rock and cliff. Since the end of 2023 a subsea road tunnel has connected Sandoy to Streymoy. It replaced the ferry as the main link and brought the island much closer to Tórshavn.
The island's largest village sits near a sandy bay and lakes, a rare sight in the Faroes, and forms the most detailed part of the map.
Several lakes lie in the island's lower valleys, giving the interior soft, rounded shapes that stand out against the rolling hills around them.
The tunnel from Streymoy comes up in the north of the island, and a road from its portal now carries traffic on to the villages.

Koteā ko Sandoy
Sandoy suits people who know the Faroes well, from those with family in its villages to walkers who have crossed its hills. Its quiet, open map is a calm counterpoint to the dramatic silhouettes of the northern islands.
You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a village, a family name or a date, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Order a matte print or download six sizes for $9.
