Te mapa
Santa Inês lies in the Pindaré valley of western Maranhão, in low, open country between the Atlantic coast and the edge of the Amazon. From above the town is a compact grid of streets that thins into scattered blocks and pasture at its edges. Several federal highways meet here, and that explains much of its shape: the built-up area stretches out along the roads leading away from the centre.
The town grew as a commercial centre for the surrounding farming and ranching region, and today it serves many smaller municipalities nearby. The Carajás railway carries iron ore from the mines of Pará to the port of São Luís and passes through Santa Inês. Its passenger service makes the town a regular stop for people travelling between the interior and the coast.
A Santa Inês map poster turns this working town into a clear, graphic image. The long straight line of the railway, the highways fanning outward and the tidy blocks of the centre sit against open space where fields and wetlands lie. It is a map with a strong sense of movement, drawn around the routes that brought the town into being.
The railway between the mines of Pará and São Luís crosses the map as a long, steady line, one of the most distinctive features of the town's layout.
Federal highways meet at the town, and commercial streets stretch along them. This gives the built-up area an elongated, star-like outline.
In the older centre, streets form a regular grid of blocks around churches, markets and small squares. It is the densest part of the composition.
