Te mapa
Santos Dumont lies in the southeast of Minas Gerais, in hilly country near the Serra da Mantiqueira. On a map the town is shaped by its valley: streets follow the lower ground and the bends of the terrain, while neighbourhoods climb the slopes on either side. The result is an elongated, irregular outline rather than a compact grid.
The town grew around the railway that linked Rio de Janeiro to the interior of Minas Gerais, and the line still runs through it. Originally known as Palmira, it was renamed in honour of the aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, who was born nearby at the Cabangu farm in 1873. The farm is now a museum dedicated to his life.
A Santos Dumont map poster combines the flowing lines of the valley and the railway with the denser pattern of the town centre. In black and white, the hills are implied by how the streets bend and branch, giving the map a sense of depth. It is a fitting portrait of a town named for a pioneer of flight.

The historic railway runs through the town along the valley, a long, steady line that reflects how the settlement first developed.
The Cabangu farm outside the town, birthplace of Alberto Santos-Dumont, is now a museum and the place most closely linked to the town's name.
