Te mapa
São Marcos is a town in the Serra Gaúcha, the highland region of Rio Grande do Sul settled by Italian immigrants from the late nineteenth century. It lies north of Caxias do Sul on the BR-116 highway. Like its neighbours, it carries that heritage in its surnames, its food and its farming, with vineyards and orchards on the surrounding slopes.
From above, the terrain shapes the town. The highway runs through as the dominant line, and the streets of the centre spread out from it, bending with the contours of the hills instead of keeping to a strict grid. Valleys cut into the edges, and beyond them farm roads wind across the uplands between fields and patches of forest.
A São Marcos map poster shows a mountain town in its simplest form: a road, a centre and the land folding around them. In black and white, the curving streets create a more fluid pattern than the planned towns of Brazil's interior. It is a fitting image for people with roots in the Italian settlements of southern Brazil.
The federal highway crosses São Marcos as its main axis, linking it south to Caxias do Sul and north toward the high plateau.
Streets bend and step with the hilly ground, giving the centre a flowing, organic pattern instead of a rigid rectangular plan.
Beyond the town, small roads wind among farms, vineyards and wooded valleys across the uplands of the Serra Gaúcha.

Koteā ko São Marcos
Descendants of the Italian settlers of the Serra, and anyone who grew up in São Marcos, will recognise its streets immediately. It makes a warm gift at a family gathering or for someone who has moved to Porto Alegre or abroad.
Title it with a family surname, add a date or the coordinates, and choose one of five styles; Paper and Sand suit the hill country well. The $9 digital files include six print sizes, and printed posters are available too.
