Te mapa
Sarikei lies in Sarawak, on the lower reaches of the Rajang, Malaysia's longest river, not far from where it breaks into channels before reaching the South China Sea. The town faces the water, and on a map the wide river is the dominant feature. It is so broad here that the town looks small beside it.
The older part of Sarikei is a compact grid of shophouse streets along the waterfront, where river traffic once brought most goods and passengers. Newer neighbourhoods extend inland along the roads. Beyond them the land is low, flat and wet, with rivers, creeks and cultivated plots running through peat and forest.
Sarikei is widely known for its pineapples, and a large pineapple sculpture on the waterfront has become the town's symbol. A Sarikei map poster shows the relationship between the town and the river: a tight grid on the bank, the Rajang flowing past, and water and wetland in every direction.
Malaysia's longest river flows past the town in a wide band. It is by far the largest shape on the map, and the town sits on its edge.
The historic commercial centre is a compact grid of shophouse streets facing the river. It is the densest and most regular part of the print.
Small rivers and creeks wind through the low land around the town. They give the edges of the map a fine, branching texture.

For people from Sarikei now living in Kuching, the peninsula or abroad, a map of the river town is an easy way to keep home in view. The broad river and small grid make a strong, simple composition.
