Te mapa
Shek Kip Mei is an area in Sham Shui Po District in northern Kowloon. It sits where the flat, crowded street grid of Sham Shui Po meets the steep hills on the Kowloon Tong side. From above, you see large blocks of public housing estates stepping up the slopes, with curved access roads and small hillside parks between them.
The area holds a key place in Hong Kong history. After a major fire destroyed a squatter settlement here in 1953, the government began the resettlement programme that grew into the city's large public housing system. Mei Ho House, one of the early resettlement blocks, has been preserved and now operates as a hostel.
A Shek Kip Mei map poster captures that shift from grid to hillside. Tight rectangular streets fill one side of the sheet, while on the other, estate blocks and winding roads follow the contours. There is also a notable metro station and a tangle of flyovers and nullahs.
Large public housing blocks step up the slopes on terraced platforms. They form bold, repeating shapes on the map.
Below the hills, a dense rectangular street pattern takes over. Its fine texture contrasts clearly with the looser estate layout above.
This preserved resettlement block recalls the aftermath of the 1953 fire and the start of Hong Kong's public housing programme.
