Shimen lies within the Chongqing municipality in southwest China, a region defined by steep hills, river valleys and terraced land. On a map the settlement forms a compact cluster, with roads bending to follow the contours of the ground. Very little here runs straight, and that gives the drawing a distinctive, flowing character.
