Te mapa
Shirone lies on the Echigo Plain, now part of Niigata City's Minami ward. The land here is completely flat, and from above the town sits between rivers: the broad Shinano River to one side and the smaller Nakanokuchi River running close by. The built-up area follows the riverbanks, while around it stretches a patchwork of rice paddies divided into neat rectangles.
Shirone is best known for its giant kite battle, held every June, in which teams on opposite banks of the Nakanokuchi fly huge kites and try to tangle and bring down each other's lines over the water. The tradition goes back centuries, and the river is at the heart of it. The area is also known for its fruit orchards.
A Shirone map poster shows a town defined by water and farmland: the lines of the rivers, the long streets along their banks and the geometric fields beyond. It is an elegant, calm composition, and for anyone who has watched the kites over the river, a meaningful one.
The Shinano and Nakanokuchi rivers run close to each other near the town, and their parallel lines define the shape of the map.
The banks of the Nakanokuchi River are the stage for the annual giant kite battle, with teams gathered on either side.
Rice fields surround the town in a regular pattern of rectangular plots, giving the countryside a strong geometric texture.
