Shiyan lies in the rural hill country northeast of central Chongqing, in the eastern part of the Sichuan Basin, and is a different place from the larger city of Shiyan in Hubei. On a map the town is small and compact, its streets pressed into the valley floor and bending around low ridges, so the plan follows the land rather than any fixed grid.
Around the town, the countryside is folded into long ridges that run in parallel, a pattern typical of this part of the basin.
