Te mapa
Shuzenji is a hot-spring town in the middle of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, now part of the city of Izu. It lies in a narrow, wooded valley, and the Katsura River runs through its centre, crossed by a series of small bridges that link the two sides of town.
The town takes its name from Shuzen-ji, a temple traditionally said to have been founded by the monk Kūkai in the early ninth century. Around the temple and along the river are ryokan, footpaths and a well-known bamboo grove walk, giving the old core a compact, walkable character.
A Shuzenji map poster shows how closely the town follows its valley. The river is the central line, with lanes and buildings pressed close on both banks and roads curving away up the hillsides. It is an intimate composition, quite different from the gridded cities of the Japanese plains.
The river runs through the middle of the onsen district, and the town's lanes and inns line both banks along its course.
A sequence of short bridges crosses the Katsura, stitching the two halves of the town together at regular intervals.
Shuzen-ji, the temple that gave the town its name, anchors the old centre near the river, with footpaths leading off into the valley.
