Te mapa
Sitangkai is a municipality in Tawi-Tawi, in the far southwest of the Philippines near the sea border with Malaysian Sabah. Much of the town is built over the water. Houses stand on stilts above a wide, shallow reef flat and are linked by wooden walkways, and small boats travel along the open channels between them. It is often called the Venice of the Southern Philippines.
On a map, that makes Sitangkai unusual. Instead of a street grid there are rows of buildings over the water, separated by narrow lanes of sea, with a small area of solid land nearby. The surrounding reef and open sea fill most of the frame, dotted with low islands and shoals.
A Sitangkai map poster records a way of settling the landscape that very few places share. The $9 digital files come in six sizes, each an unwatermarked 300 DPI PNG plus a print-ready PDF. Printed posters on matte paper ship from partners in more than 30 countries, with a wooden frame as an option.
Rows of buildings raised above the reef flat form the core of the town. On the map they look like a cluster of shapes resting directly on the sea.
Channels between the house rows serve as the town's main routes, travelled by small boats instead of cars, and they appear as narrow bands of open water.
Shallow reef, low islands and shoals surround the town in every direction and give the outer frame a scattered, archipelago pattern.

Koteā ko Sitangkai
Sitangkai is a place of real significance to Sama and Bajau families and to anyone who has visited Tawi-Tawi. Its map does not look like an ordinary town plan, which makes it a notable piece on any wall.
Edit the title, subtitle and coordinates line to add a family name, a date or a short phrase. Blueprint emphasises the water well, and Classic, Noir, Paper and Sand are also available as digital files or printed posters.
