Te mapa
Sühbaatar is the capital of Selenge Province in northern Mongolia, close to the Russian border opposite Kyakhta. It sits near the confluence of the Orkhon and Selenge rivers, two of the country's main waterways, in a valley of meadows and forested hills.
The Trans-Mongolian Railway runs through the town, and Sühbaatar is the last major Mongolian station before the border crossing into Russia. The town's streets follow a fairly regular Soviet-era plan, with apartment blocks, public buildings and districts of detached houses on the outskirts.
A Sühbaatar map poster brings together a regular street grid, the long line of the railway and the curves of two meeting rivers. The town is named after Damdin Sükhbaatar, a leader of the 1921 revolution, and it remains an important gateway between Mongolia and Russia.
The Orkhon joins the Selenge near the town, and the curves of the two rivers and their floodplains give the print its most distinctive natural shapes.
The railway runs through town on its way to the Russian border, forming a long straight line that divides and anchors the street pattern.
The centre follows a regular plan from the socialist period, with wide streets and apartment blocks, surrounded by looser districts of houses.
