Te mapa
Sun Tin Wai is a walled village in the Sha Tin district of Hong Kong's New Territories, near Tai Wai. Villages like this were built as compact, defensible blocks of houses arranged in close rows, and that form is still visible from above. The small, tight footprint of the village stands out clearly among the much larger estates and roads that have grown up around it.
Walled villages are among the oldest settlement forms in the New Territories, founded by clans long before the new towns arrived. In Sha Tin, many survived the rapid development of the 1970s and 1980s and now sit alongside rail lines, housing estates and river channels. The map shows that layering: an old village grain inside a modern urban plan.
A Sun Tin Wai map poster is a detailed look at a very particular corner of Hong Kong. The closely packed village, the wide roads around it and the green hills in the distance make a composition with both history and scale. It is a meaningful piece for village families, Sha Tin residents and anyone interested in how Hong Kong grew.
The original village forms a small, tightly packed block of houses. On the poster it reads as a dense, fine-grained patch surrounded by much larger buildings.
High-rise estates, roads and rail lines have grown up around the village, placing it inside a modern urban plan with very different proportions.
The steep, green slopes around the valley frame the view. They add large quiet areas to the composition and underline the setting in the New Territories.
