Sunabeda lies on the high plateau of Koraput district in southern Odisha, among the hills of the Eastern Ghats. The town largely grew around the aircraft engine division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. That origin is clear on the map: planned residential sectors, wide roads and neatly arranged blocks sit alongside the older, less regular settlement.
The planned township is laid out in orderly loops and sectors, with schools, markets and open ground placed between them. Beyond the town, the land becomes hilly and forested. Roads wind through the countryside toward Koraput and Jeypore, and the upland setting gives the town a cooler climate than the plains below.
