Te mapa
Tanabe, today known as the city of Kyōtanabe, lies in the south of Kyoto Prefecture, between Kyoto and Nara. The Kizu River runs along its eastern side, and low wooded hills rise to the west. On a map, the city shows a mix of dense residential areas around its railway stations, newer housing developments and remaining patches of farmland.
Two railway lines run north to south through the city, and the built-up areas gather around their stations. Kyōtanabe is home to a large campus of Doshisha University, and it is also known for Ikkyū-ji, the temple associated with the Zen monk Ikkyū, whose name is familiar to many people in Japan.
A Tanabe map poster shows a landscape in transition between the river plain and the hills, between older villages and modern suburbs. The railway lines form strong vertical strokes, the river a soft curve on one side, and the campus and housing areas fill the space between with finer lines.
The river flows along the eastern side of the city, and its broad channel forms a natural border that frames the eastern edge of the map.
Two lines run north to south through the city, with neighbourhoods gathered around their stations, giving the map strong, parallel lines.
The university's large campus in the western hills forms a distinct area of buildings and paths, set apart from the surrounding residential streets.
