Tange is a town in south-eastern Gansu Province, in the loess uplands of north-west China. This landscape is made of fine, wind-deposited soil that has been cut into ridges and deep gullies by water, and farmed for centuries on hand-built terraces. Settlements tend to sit on valley floors, where the land is flattest and roads can pass.
From above, the town has a compact core that stretches along the valley, and roads follow the lowest ground instead of going straight. Outside town, the map becomes a pattern of winding lanes that climb along the contours to hillside villages. The street network is irregular in a way that directly reflects the terrain.
