Te mapa
Tenri lies in the eastern part of the Nara Basin, where the flat valley floor meets forested hills. It is the only city in Japan named after a religion: Tenrikyo, founded in the nineteenth century, has its headquarters here. On the map, its sanctuary and the large surrounding precincts form a distinctive block of open space and large buildings near the centre.
The area is also very old. Isonokami Shrine, one of Japan's most ancient Shinto shrines, stands in the city, and the Yamanobe-no-michi, often described as the oldest road in Japan, runs along the foot of the hills to the east. Tenri University and its library are also part of the city.
A Tenri map poster contrasts the regular streets of the basin with the large institutional precincts and the winding path along the hills. The layout reflects both an ancient landscape and a modern religious centre.
The religious headquarters and its surrounding buildings occupy a large area near the centre, appearing as broad blocks and open courts among the city streets.
An ancient road runs along the foot of the eastern hills, passing shrines, temples and burial mounds on its way south through the city.
One of Japan's oldest shrines sits in wooded ground on the city's eastern side, a quiet, green area at the edge of the streets.

Koteā ko Tenri
Tenri draws believers, students and walkers on the ancient road, and many carry a strong attachment to it. A map records the precincts, streets and hills in a calm, lasting form.
