Te mapa
Tōkamachi lies in the south of Niigata Prefecture, in one of the snowiest inhabited regions of Japan. The city centre occupies a valley floor beside the Shinano River, the country's longest river, and on a map the streets form a compact grid along the valley while roads branch outward into folded, wooded hills.
The city has long been known for silk weaving and kimono production, and its snow festival draws visitors each winter. Since 2000 it has also been a main venue of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, whose triennale places artworks among rice terraces and villages. The Hoshitoge terraces in the Matsudai area are well known to photographers.
A Tōkamachi map poster shows two scales of life at once: the ordered town on the river terraces and the thin, winding roads that reach the villages above. Contour-following lanes and small clusters of houses make the outer areas look almost hand-drawn, a good match for a city known as a place where land and art meet.
The river sweeps through the valley beside the town, a broad curving band that sets the direction of the main streets and the railway.
The central district is laid out in regular blocks on flat ground, a dense rectangle surrounded by the looser shapes of hillside roads.
Narrow lanes climb from the valley to hamlets and rice terraces, drawing fine branching lines that fill the edges of the poster.

Koteā ko Tōkamachi
Visitors who came for the art triennale, the snow festival or the terraces often want a way to remember a place that is hard to photograph whole. A clean street map brings the valley and its villages into one frame.
Add the year of your visit in the subtitle, change the title, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the valley grid, while Paper gives the hills a softer look.
