Te mapa
T’ongch’ŏn-ŭp is the administrative centre of T’ongch’ŏn County in Kangwŏn Province, on the eastern coast of North Korea facing the East Sea. The town lies on the narrow coastal strip that runs along this side of the peninsula. Here the Taebaek mountains rise steeply behind the shore and leave only limited flat land for settlement and farming.
On a map, the town appears as a modest cluster of streets near the coast, linked by road and rail to other settlements along the shoreline. Fields and small rivers fill the plain, and the coast itself forms a long, clean edge. The county is known for Ch’ongsŏkchŏng, a stretch of basalt columns rising from the sea and one of the classic scenic sites of the Korean east coast.
The county is also remembered as the birthplace of Chung Ju-yung, founder of Hyundai, whose home village lay nearby. A T’ongch’ŏn-ŭp map poster offers a rare view of a place few people can visit, reduced to its essential lines: the coast, the roads, the rivers and the small grid of the town itself.
The shoreline runs along the eastern side of the map as a long, steady line, separating the settled plain from open water.
Between mountains and sea, a narrow band of flat land holds the town, its fields and the small streams that flow toward the shore.
Road and railway follow the coast north and south, thin parallel lines that connect the town with the rest of Kangwŏn Province.
