Te mapa
Tuqiang is in Mohe County, the northernmost corner of Heilongjiang and of China itself. The Amur River and the Russian border lie a short way to the north. From above, the town appears as a small rectangle of streets carved out of an enormous expanse of forest, with river valleys and ridges running in every direction.
The streets follow a practical, mostly regular layout, with a railway and a few roads linking the town to the rest of the region. Beyond the last buildings the map empties out, and the only lines are streams in the valleys and the odd track leading into the woods.
The Mohe area is known as the coldest part of China, with long winters and very short summer nights. Tourists come for the northern lights and for the feeling of being at the country's northern limit. A Tuqiang map poster shows a small settlement surrounded by wilderness, where the empty space counts as much as the streets.
The town is a compact block of streets inside dense larch and birch forest, and on the map it looks like an island in open white space.
Small rivers wind through the surrounding hills toward the Amur basin, drawing the thin, meandering lines that fill the outer frame.
The railway that serves China's far north runs through the area, one of the few long straight lines in this landscape.

Koteā ko Tuqiang
Tuqiang appeals to anyone drawn to the edges of maps: people who worked in the northern forests, travellers who went looking for the aurora, or families from Heilongjiang. The poster turns a remote town into a quiet graphic.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir, with its dark ground, suits a place of long winter nights.
