Uarini is a small town in the state of Amazonas, in the middle Solimões region of the Brazilian Amazon, not far from Tefé. On a map, water dominates. River channels, oxbow lakes and flooded forest surround the town, and the built area sits on a stretch of higher bank. There are few roads. Most travel here is by boat, and the map reflects that.
The town is widely known for farinha de Uarini, a coarse, granular manioc flour valued across the Amazon and recognised with a geographical indication. Its production shapes the rural areas around town, where small farms clear patches of land near the water. The river level rises and falls through the year, changing the shoreline and the reach of the surrounding lakes.
