Te mapa
Viñales is a small town in the far west of Cuba, in the province of Pinar del Río. Its plan is very simple. A long main street lined with low, porched houses runs through the centre, and a handful of parallel and cross streets fill out a short grid. Beyond them, the valley floor opens into fields broken by the steep, rounded limestone hills known as mogotes.
The Viñales Valley was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in 1999, recognised for its karst scenery and its traditional farming, especially tobacco grown by hand and dried in thatched barns. The town is the base for visitors exploring the valley, its caves and its viewpoints.
A Viñales map poster shows how small the town really is compared with the landscape around it. The short street grid sits among winding rural roads and farm tracks that bend around the bases of the mogotes. In monochrome, the valley becomes a study of a straight town set within irregular hills.
One long street forms the spine of the town, and the rest of its modest grid is arranged around it, which gives the plan a clear central axis.
Steep-sided limestone hills rise from the flat valley floor, and the roads visibly curve to avoid them in the surrounding countryside.
Small fields and tracks spread across the valley, an agricultural pattern protected as part of the UNESCO cultural landscape.

Koteā ko Viñales
Viñales tends to stay with people long after a trip to Cuba, whether they remember cycling past tobacco barns or watching the sunset over the mogotes. A map of the town and valley keeps that memory in a restrained, graphic form.
