Te mapa
Wanning lies on the southeastern coast of Hainan Island, facing the South China Sea. The urban centre is compact and sits a little inland. Its streets spread across a plain of farmland, rivers and low hills. Toward the coast, the map opens into a sequence of sandy bays and rocky headlands, each with its own small cluster of roads and buildings.
The coastline is what draws most visitors. Riyue Bay and Shimei Bay are known for their beaches, and Riyue Bay in particular has become one of the best-known surfing spots in China. Inland, the Xinglong area is known for its tropical botanical garden and for coffee growing, which has long been associated with communities of returned overseas Chinese.
A Wanning map poster shows the town and its shoreline together: the modest street grid of the centre, the scattered villages and the long, curving coast with its bays. It is an open, airy composition, with more water and less density than most city maps, and it suits calm rooms.
Riyue Bay, Shimei Bay and the neighbouring coves appear as smooth crescents of shoreline separated by headlands, which give the map a gently scalloped edge.
The main town forms a small, dense cluster of streets surrounded by open land, with roads branching out toward the villages and the coast.
South of the centre, Xinglong adds its own pocket of streets. The area is known for its botanical garden and its long association with coffee growing.
