Wenchang lies on the northeastern corner of Hainan Island, and the sea is never far from any part of its map. The coastline is long and varied, with sandy beaches, sheltered bays and inlets. Inland, a compact urban centre gives way to villages and plantations, and a river runs from the town toward the coast. Roads link the scattered coastal settlements along the shore.
Wenchang is closely associated with coconut groves, and the local chicken dish carries its name across China. More recently it has become known for the Wenchang Space Launch Site, China's coastal spaceport, from which major missions have been launched. Many overseas Chinese families trace their roots to the area, and older buildings in the town reflect those connections.
