Wheaton is the county seat of DuPage County, about 25 miles west of downtown Chicago. The town grew along the railroad, and the Union Pacific West commuter line still runs through the centre, with the downtown gathered around the station. The streets beyond follow a regular Midwestern grid of tree-lined residential blocks.
Wheaton College, founded in 1860, occupies a campus of lawns and quads just north of downtown. The Illinois Prairie Path, an early rail-to-trail conversion, crosses the town on the line of an old interurban railway. On the western side, Cantigny Park adds a large expanse of gardens and open ground.
