Te mapa
Wilson lies on the coastal plain of eastern North Carolina, and its map is organised around the railroad. The main line runs north–south through downtown, where the street grid is at its tightest. Beyond the centre, the grid loosens into residential neighbourhoods, then into highways, shopping strips and farmland on the edges.
For much of the twentieth century Wilson was known as one of the largest tobacco markets in the world, and large warehouse blocks near downtown still show that past. Today the city is also known for the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park, which displays the large wind-driven sculptures of the local artist, and for Barton College.
A Wilson map poster captures the structure of a Southern railroad town. The tracks form a strong central axis, downtown a dense grid beside them, and the neighbourhoods and highways spread outward in a clear, readable pattern.
The main line runs through the centre of the city from north to south. It gives the map a strong spine and explains the layout of downtown.
Short, regular blocks cluster near the tracks, including former tobacco warehouse areas. This is the densest and oldest part of the map.
The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park occupies a downtown block near the tracks. On the map it is a small open space within the tight grid.
